Let your light shine, online!

Social Media is here to stay - but how can (and should) the church respond?

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16 NIV

Social Media has been the focus and topic of conversation for lately…and for good reason. With so many seemingly self-absorbed people, selfies flying at your face faster than you can scroll past them, people bragging about their new cars, new home, their big vacations…what has this world come to?

Well, I don’t think Social Media has changed us…I think it has revealed us. I think the temptations to share these things in our life have always been there…but Social Media has given society an inside-look and access to our personal lives like we’ve never had before. That’s a big thing!

The crowds that Jesus was speaking to in Matthew 5:16 were crowds much like ones you would find today…families, religious leaders, skeptics, doubters. These people (especially the religious leaders) were experts at letting their works shine, in hopes of impressing people around them.

This is the crowd, and the mentality that Jesus interrupts with the words “…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Notice He said to “let your light shine” not “let your works shine”. He is pointing to the inside. The hope given by the Father. We have been given this hope, this light. So…let’s shine it.

How do we shine a light in this digital world? It can be as simple as sharing an encouraging quote, Bible verse, or blog you read. We don’t have to make it complicated, or overly religious. Saying something as simple as “You are loved!” can be the very thing that someone needed to see while scrolling through their Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram feed.

When we have the light on the inside, we realize that it isn’t about our work, rather…it is about our partnership with His work. And, my friends, He is moving online. The Lord knew the world was going to go digital, and it would be a shame for The Church to be the last group of people to figure it out.
